GBS is a normal part of a woman’s vaginal or rectal environment.  However, if your baby gets this bacteria in their mouth during delivery, it can travel to the baby’s brain or lungs and cause serious infection.  We recommend a swab of the vagina and rectum between 35-37 weeks to test for the bacteria. If it is present, we recommend antibiotics to be given during your labour to protect the baby. For more information please see attached info.
